At Aloura Family Practice, we provide both full body skin checks and targeted examinations depending on your needs and concerns. Our doctors are experienced in identifying skin changes that may require monitoring or treatment and can perform skin biopsies or minor excisions in-house when appropriate.
If a lesion requires more specialised care, we will refer you to a trusted dermatologist or surgical specialist for further management.
Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. Regular skin cancer checks are important for early detection and effective treatment. We generally recommend annual skin checks for adults, particularly for those who:
If you notice any new, changing, or unusual spots, it’s best to arrange a mole check as soon as possible, rather than waiting for your next routine review.
A full body skin check typically takes around 15 to 20 minutes. Your doctor will carefully examine your skin from head to toe, including commonly overlooked areas such as the scalp, ears and feet. You may be asked to remove certain clothing items to allow a clear view of your skin. Privacy and comfort are always prioritised throughout the examination.
For targeted concerns, a shorter appointment may be scheduled to focus on a specific mole or area of skin. If your doctor identifies a suspicious lesion, they can often perform a skin biopsy during the same visit to confirm a diagnosis.
We kindly ask patients to book a long consultation for skin checks, as cryotherapy for sunspots or early skin cancers may be performed during the same appointment if appropriate.
If a biopsy confirms a skin cancer diagnosis, your GP will discuss the results with you and outline the next steps. This may include treatment in our clinic or referral to a dermatologist or specialist surgeon for advanced care. We also provide ongoing follow-up and education about sun protection, self-checking and risk reduction.
Routine skin cancer checks are an essential part of preventive health care. Early detection allows for timely treatment, less invasive procedures and better long-term outcomes. Our team is here to help you understand your risk factors and create a regular monitoring plan suited to your skin type and medical history.
